Anxiety Series

Everything became much more difficult due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Simple things were now fraught with anxiety. As an artist with Lupus, these paintings are how I dealt with the stress. Drawing these constructions gave me a vocabulary of objects to represent swirling tensions and complicated decision making. Focusing on the weight of a stone, the strength of a pin, the tight twist of fabric, and fragile stitches of thread, I could place my jumbled feelings in contained spaces where they could find balance.
a piece of fabric is tightly twisted into a rope shape and stretches vertically from top to bottom and one third of the distance from the right side of the page. two other, more open fabrics wrap around the tightly twisted fabric and pull it from the right and from the left. the two fabrics pulling on the twisted fabric stretch off the page to the left and to the right. They take up a lot of space.

a broken stick from a tree branch is held half way up and half way down the left side of the page. String is wrapped around the stick at the top and bottom and is pulled tightly to the left and off the page. in the center of the stick, white fabric wraps around it like a sling. the fabric is pulled tightly in different directions by string. Sometimes the fabric is twisted around itself. There are differnt colors of string- white, brown, blue, pale violet. it is all suspended in open space with no defining features

a white cloth like a handkerchief is stretched tightly between objects pulling at the corners. upper left corner is held by safety pin and string. Lower left is held by 7 red strings sewn through the fabric. lower right corner is held by a wooden clothes pin. upper right corner is pierced and held by a barbed fish hook.

A series of objects are dangling from the top of the page. A frayed string holds a safety pin. the safety pin is stretched open and a piece of white fabric is hooked on the end. A string is tied to the bottom corner of the white fabric. The string is frayed almost to the breaking point but it is wrapped several times securely around a smooth grey stone with quartz zig zagging through it. The stone dangles in open space.

the bottom of a door is shown at an angle from half way up left side of page to to lower right. There is light spilling under the door onto a wood floor. There is a nail in the floor through a white cloth. The white cloth continues to the other side of the door and is stretched tightly like it is straining to pull free. If the door opens it will hit the nail. The cloth is trapped. it cant get free from its side of the door and it cant open the door.
